| There is a silence in this picture known only to the open Atlantic off the western shores of Ireland. William Trost Richards spreads before us the wide panorama of Donegal Bay, where water, sky and the distant line of land meet in a delicate, almost meditative balance. The waves roll towards the shore in a calm, measured rhythm, and the eye loses itself in the vastness of a horizon dissolved in Atlantic haze. Richards paints light with the tenderness of a student of nature.
