The painter stretches an immense, luminous sky over the water, filling the canvas with the glow of golden, almost tangible light. It is a panorama teeming with life, yet saturated with the calm of wide, open space. Sailing ships with taut canvas, tiny figures of sailors, reflections shimmering on the waves — everything here works together in a precisely balanced composition. With masterly skill Cuyp renders the air and moisture of a harbour morning, and at the same time the pride of the maritime power of the Dutch Republic.
