Undergrowth with Two Figures
Vincent Van Gogh

| Slender violet poplar trunks cross the canvas vertically like temple columns, dividing the dense woodland into rhythmic bands of light and shadow. Van Gogh draws the eye deep into the thicket, where the undergrowth shimmers in cool blue, while at the foot of the trees a meadow blooms with white, pink and yellow flowers. Every brushstroke vibrates, creating an almost musical, undulating pattern that animates the entire surface. Amid the lush vegetation, almost hidden, a pair of lovers shelters — two small figures dissolved into the green, as if part of nature itself. This delicate, intimate meeting of humanity and the natural world brings a warm, human note to the monumental, almost panoramic composition. A silvery tonality, characteristic of the Auvers works, lends the scene a sense of calm and stillness despite the density of the paint. Painted on an unusual double-square canvas, the work testifies to the artist's remarkable vitality at the end of his journey. Though created in one of the most difficult periods of Van Gogh's life, it bears no trace of torment — on the contrary, it radiates wonder at the fecundity and exuberance of nature. A painting that brings a mood of woodland solace and contemplative harmony to any interior. Van Gogh painted this work in late June 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, only a few weeks before his death. In that intense period he produced almost one canvas a day and experimented with the double-square format — a wide, panoramic canvas twice as broad as it is high. In a letter to his brother Theo dated 30 June he described the scene: 'the violet trunks of poplars cross the landscape perpendicularly like columns. The depths of the undergrowth are blue, and under the big trunks the flowery meadow.' The painting is now in the Cincinnati Art Museum. |
