A vast field of ripe wheat ripples beneath the summer sky, its golden expanse seeming to flow toward the horizon to the rhythm of energetic, band-like brushstrokes. Van Gogh transforms an ordinary rural view into a force full of movement and warmth — every ear of grain trembles, and the air almost vibrates with light. It is a landscape in which the labour of the land and its abundance become an almost symphonic theme. Amid the grain bends the figure of a reaper, small yet significant — a symbol of the eternal cycle of sowing and harvest, of toil and reward. For Van Gogh the reaper held a deeper meaning: he saw in him an image of transience and serene acceptance of fate, 'humanity as the wheat to be reaped.' This quiet human presence lends the sweeping composition a dimension of reflection on life and nature. A warm palette of yellows, greens and gentle blues creates a mood of serenity and calm, yet also the tension characteristic of the master's late works. The painting radiates vitality and the love of the rural landscape that Van Gogh carried within him all his life. On a wall it becomes a source of warmth and optimism, evoking the scent of summer and the boundlessness of open fields. The canvas was painted in the summer of 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, during the artist's final weeks. The motif of the reaper had fascinated Van Gogh earlier — in Saint-Rémy he created several versions, writing to his brother Theo that he saw in this figure 'the image of death, but without sadness, taking place in full light, in a sun flooding everything with gold.' The work is now held in the Toledo Museum of Art in the United States.
