Farm with Stacks of Peat
Vincent Van Gogh
| This painting is steeped in the damp and silence of a northern province. Van Gogh depicts a humble farm surrounded by heaped stacks of peat — the fuel of the poor, dug from the marshlands. Heavy, earthy tones of brown, ochre and muted green build a landscape that is raw and true, with no room for embellishment and deep respect for hard life on the margins. A low, leaden sky presses down on the horizon while the flat line of the land stretches wide, conveying the vastness and emptiness of the Drenthe peat bogs. The dense, material texture of the paint almost lets you smell wet earth and smoke. Van Gogh seeks no spectacular light here — he seeks the truth of a place where nature and poverty intertwine into one melancholy image. There is a gravity in this canvas that moves us. It holds no sentimentality, but compassion and attention. The artist looks at this forgotten corner of the world as one looks at something worthy of remembrance. The work teaches us to regard the ordinary with tenderness, finding beauty in austerity and dignity in the simplicity of daily existence. The canvas belongs to a short but intense period in autumn 1883, when van Gogh stayed in the province of Drenthe in the northern Netherlands. Fascinated by the vast peat bogs and the labour of their inhabitants, he dreamed of creating peasant painting in the spirit of his admired Jean-François Millet — and it was there that his vision of a painter of the people matured. |
