A dark, almost monochrome palette of browns, bottle greens and muted ochres conveys the mood of a humble Dutch village. It is architecture that seems to grow straight from the ground — low, heavy, fused with the landscape and the seasons. The artist builds the image with a dense, decisive substance of paint, laid so that one feels the roughness of the thatch, the damp of the walls and the still air.
