Peasant Woman Binding Sheaves (After Millet)
Vincent Van Gogh

| The stooped figure of a woman, absorbed in the rhythmic labour of binding grain, fills the canvas with a calm, monumental strength. Van Gogh does not idealise work in the fields — he conveys its weight, but also its dignity. The peasant's body, rendered in energetic, undulating lines, seems an extension of the very earth, bound to it by the eternal, unchanging cycle of the harvest. A palette of warm yellows, ochres and earthy browns radiates the light of ripe summer. Van Gogh's characteristic dense, swirling brushstrokes give the scene movement and an inner vibration — even the field seems to tremble to the rhythm of the work. It is a simple composition, yet full of tension, in which every gesture of the figure carries gravity and concentration. The painting is a tribute to the common person and their indissoluble bond with nature. Throughout his life Van Gogh admired working people, seeing in them the authenticity and truth he sought in art. Brought into an interior, the work introduces a mood of warmth, simplicity and respect for everyday toil — a timeless image of human perseverance. This is one of the many 'interpretations' of Jean-François Millet, whom Van Gogh revered almost as a spiritual master. Many of these canvases were made in the winter of 1889–1890 at the Saint-Rémy asylum, where the artist — deprived of models — worked from black-and-white prints after Millet, 'translating' them into his own fiery language of colour. |
