Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat
Vincent Van Gogh
| Beneath the brim of a straw hat, Van Gogh's face brightens with summer light, and the whole canvas seems woven from small, rhythmic brushstrokes. The blue smock and pale background vibrate with short dashes that form a halo of colour around the head. It is an image full of air and warmth — as if the artist had stepped, for a moment, out of the gloom of his earlier work into full sunshine. The painter's gaze is calmer than in many other self-portraits, yet still attentive and alert. The straw hat — the attribute of a peasant and a plein-air painter — lends the whole an air of directness and unforced simplicity. Van Gogh presents himself not as a hero but as a worker of light, someone who went out into the fields to paint nature up close. The entire composition is a study in colour and texture — complementary pairings of blue and orange, yellow and violet make the surface quiver and shimmer. This is a work of his Paris period, when his fascination with colour theory and the divided brushstroke was ripening. Van Gogh painted several self-portraits in a straw hat in the summer of 1887, some of them on the reverse of earlier canvases — the designation 'F 365v' (verso) points precisely to the back of another painting. It testifies to the thrift of an artist who struggled with poverty and often used both sides of the canvas. |
