The Virgin and Child are set within the framing of an architectural niche, which, like a frame of stone, encloses the sacred scene and lends it the character of an altarpiece apparition. This device introduces a sense of depth and gravity — the figures seem to emerge from the half-shadow of the recess, near yet dignified. The niche becomes here a metaphor for the sacred: a set-apart space in which the silence of prayer unfolds. With his characteristic sensitivity, Botticelli draws a soft, melodic line of contour, modelling the oval of Mary's face and the plump forms of the Child. Warm flesh tones illuminate the muted interior of the niche, while the deep red and blue of the Marian garments bring an accent of colour and symbolic meaning.
