In the half-light of a prison cell unfolds a scene that arrests the eye and challenges us to grasp its meaning. A young woman with pale, pearly skin leans over an old man chained to the wall and offers him her breast — a gesture that seems ambiguous at first, yet is in truth an act of supreme self-sacrifice. Rubens shapes this intimacy with light: Pero's body glows like a source of radiance, while the careworn, weathered figure of Cimon sinks into warm brown shadow. The whole canvas pulses with Rubens's characteristic sensuality of matter — the woman's soft, luminous flesh contrasts with the taut muscles and pallid skin of the prisoner, while heavy drapery and the darkness of the background heighten the drama. The Antwerp master's brush renders the texture of skin, hair and cloth with almost tangible truth, and chiaroscuro turns the cramped cell into a theatre of emotion where pity, shame and tenderness intertwine in a single gesture. This is the famous Caritas Romana — Roman Charity. To save her father, condemned to death by starvation, Pero secretly nourishes him with her own milk. Rubens transforms the ancient parable into a universal meditation on a child's love for a parent and on the strength born of sacrifice. The painting moves us because it unites the most carnal with the most spiritual. The theme of Roman Charity fascinated many Baroque masters, but Rubens's version is among the most celebrated and today belongs to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The story was recorded by the ancient Roman author Valerius Maximus as a model of supreme pietas — of filial duty and family love.
