The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne is one of Leonardo's most enigmatic works — a composition in which three generations interweave into a single, flowing pyramid of bodies and gazes. Mary sits on the lap of her mother, Saint Anne, leaning towards the Child, who embraces a lamb. Movement runs through the whole scene like a gentle wave. The background landscape — blue, blurred mountains dissolving into mist — seems endless and lends the painting an almost cosmic dimension. Leonardo's sfumato gives the faces a mysterious, warm smile, and the light appears to be born from within the figures. Serenity mingles here with a subtle tension. The symbolism runs deep: the lamb foreshadows the sacrifice of Christ, and Mary's gesture, trying to hold it back, speaks of a mother's care in the face of an inevitable fate. Leonardo weaves tenderness, premonition and metaphysics into a composition admired by Raphael and Michelangelo — still regarded as one of the summits of the Renaissance. Leonardo worked on this painting for many years and never fully finished it; it accompanied him until he left for France, where he died. A famous preparatory cartoon survives in London, and Sigmund Freud devoted an essay to the composition, reading hidden traces of the artist's biography into it. Today the work is held in the Louvre in Paris.
