The young and graceful Virgin holds the Christ Child on her lap, offering him a red carnation. Through a double window an airy landscape opens up, where misty blue mountains dissolve into the distance. Rich fabrics, glinting jewels and soft light reveal the hand of the young Leonardo. The scene radiates tenderness and gravity at once. The carnation — a symbol of the Passion to come — lends a note of contemplation to this seemingly intimate image of motherhood. The gazes of Mother and Child meet in a silent dialogue full of love and foreboding. Painted during his years in Verrocchio's workshop, the work shows Leonardo moving beyond convention. The modelling in light and shadow, the naturalistic folds of the garments and the atmospheric perspective foreshadow the revolution he would soon bring to painting.
