| Among the reeds and the sheet of still water, in the shadow of bending grasses, hides the small silhouette of a water hen. Chełmoński peers into an intimate, hidden corner of the Mazovian wetlands - a world that usually escapes the human eye. This is a painting of silence and watchfulness, in which a single bird becomes the full-fledged protagonist of a quiet drama of nature. With remarkable sensitivity, the painter conveys the moist atmosphere of the marshes - the gleam of water, the thicket of reeds and the soft, diffused light suspended over the wetland. A palette of muted greens, browns and silvery reflections builds a mood of concentration and mystery. Free yet precise brushstrokes let us almost hear the rustle of the rushes and the splash of water.
