On a stubble field, lying freely on the still-warm earth, a young country woman raises a thin thread of gossamer between her fingers with childlike fascination. Around her stretches the drowsy, golden silence of early autumn. Chełmoński has captured an utterly ordinary moment, yet one steeped in poetry - a moment of pause, of reverie and boundless calm. The painter leads our gaze low, almost at ground level, so that we feel drawn into the very heart of the field. A palette of warm browns, ochres and muted greens conveys the colour of fading summer, while soft, free brushstrokes create the impression of warm, shimmering air. A dog lying beside the woman and cattle grazing in the distance complete this scene of perfect harmony. This is a painting about the unity of man and nature, about a moment of respite in which time seems to flow more slowly. Within the figure of the country girl lie contemplation and quiet happiness, and in the whole composition - the artist's deep love for the Polish countryside and its rhythm. Brought into an interior, Indian Summer radiates warmth, peace and a nostalgia for a carefree, sunlit day. Indian Summer was painted in 1875 in Warsaw, just before Chełmoński left for Paris, and today belongs to the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. It is regarded as one of the most recognisable works of Polish painting - a symbol of longing for an idyllic, rural Poland. The title itself refers to the spider threads that float through the air in autumn, heralding the arrival of the 'Indian summer'.
