Delft awakens in the clear light of morning. Vermeer shows his native city from the far bank, where the still surface of the water mirrors the walls, towers and gates like a dark, trembling glass. A vast sky spreads above the town — moist clouds drift slowly, and light breaks through to lay golden reflections on the rooftops and the tower of the New Church. The master of Delft achieves something extraordinary here: he captures a moment of absolute stillness. The boats lie motionless with sails lowered, a few tiny figures talk on the quay, and the whole scene breathes a calm so deep one can almost hear the lapping water. Built from three horizontal bands — water, city and sky — the composition radiates order and monumental balance. This is one of the very few landscapes in Vermeer's oeuvre and, without doubt, the most celebrated cityscape of the Dutch Golden Age. The artist handles light and tiny points of paint with unrivalled precision, capturing the shimmer of surfaces. Beneath the apparent ordinariness of a city view lies a work of almost mystical power, regarded for centuries as one of the most beautiful paintings ever made.
