Here is one of the most famous propaganda paintings in history – a vision of power in its pure, heroic form. Napoleon, wrapped in a cloak billowing in the wind, mounts a rearing steed whose eyes blaze with wild fire. His raised hand points to the summit, and the whole composition, built on a rising diagonal, carries the viewer upward like the very element of triumph. Jacques-Louis David creates a myth, not a report. In reality Bonaparte crossed the pass on the back of a mule, led by a guide – the painter deliberately replaced the prose of fact with the spectacle of legend. The names of Hannibal and Charlemagne carved into the rocks enrol the young commander among the great conquerors of the Alps, turning the picture into a manifesto of a new age. The work's power lies in its dynamic balance: the calm, almost impassive face of the commander contrasts with the fury of the horse and the storm raging behind him. A cool palette of blues, reds and whites builds a monumental, almost statuesque effect. This is a painting that does not ask for attention – it simply seizes it. David painted several versions of this portrait – five in all, differing mainly in the colour of the cloak and the horse. The commission came first from the King of Spain, and the original version adorned a palace in Madrid. Aware of the picture's power, Napoleon barely sat for the painter, claiming no one knows whether portraits of great men are accurate – it is enough that their genius lives in them.
