A wide, almost empty beach stretches towards the horizon beneath an immense, cloud-laden sky that fills most of the composition. Jacob van Ruisdael renders the damp air of the Dutch coast with masterly feeling — a cool luminosity in which sand, water and clouds merge into one monumental mood. Tiny figures and sailing vessels in the far distance underline the vastness of the space and that humility of man before nature so typical of Ruisdael. There is no spectacular storm here, no showmanship; only a stillness in which one can almost hear the wind and the distant lapping of the waves. It is a landscape that teaches us to look slowly. The work belongs to the finest tradition of Dutch Golden Age painting, in which landscape ceased to be a backdrop and became a subject in its own right. Ruisdael, regarded as one of Europe's greatest landscapists, could turn a simple view of a beach into an image of almost metaphysical gravity.
