Aivazovsky builds this scene like a ribbon, running from the foaming, almost tropical green of the foreground water, through the dark hills of the coast, to clouds full of stormy air. The viewer's eye is guided to a group of people in a lifeboat. In the middle ground, a tilted ship under Russian colours fades away, while a skiff full of survivors drives toward the shore: their hunched, tense figures pull the oars in the rhythm of the wind. They are the titular 'survivors' - not only physically but spiritually. Once again, Aivazovsky unites marine realism with deep humanism. Looking at the canvas, we feel not only the chill of the water but also the relief of the approaching shore.
