The Black Sea was Aivazovsky's greatest muse - and in this composition it shows its most theatrical face. Among heaped waves and steep cliffs, in a mist brightened by moonlight, drift two ships: one already heeled, the other engulfed in the orange embrace of fire. By the rock rises, like a sentinel, a tall tower, and below it a quiet torch of flame burns. Fire and moon exchange light, creating a rare two-tonal atmosphere - the sky has the coolness of silver, the water the warmth of copper. It is one of those works in which Aivazovsky reveals himself as the director of nature's spectacle. The painting lends any interior a deep, almost operatic character.
