| The stillness Aivazovsky holds on the canvas carries the breath of a seaside morning, when the world has only just opened its eyes. A large sailing yacht under an Italian flag drowses on the smooth surface of the ocean like a porcelain figurine, while the sky above blooms with soft clouds in shades of cream and pale blue. Delicate reflections of masts and sails lay on the water like a second, hushed melody. In the lower left, a group of fishermen has gathered on the beach - their daily labour contrasting with the refined elegance of the yacht and adding a surprising intimacy to the scene. This is one of those paintings that heal. Aivazovsky's Biarritz is a dream of balance - between silence and motion, between land and sea - returning to us each time we linger a little longer before the canvas. |
