Against a serene landscape, amid softly cascading drapery, a nude woman reclines, turned towards a small dog. Her body, smooth and full, seems to radiate warmth, and the whole scene breathes the ease and carefree pleasure of a moment spent far from prying eyes.

Courbet abandons cool idealisation in favour of a sensual truth. The forms are full, almost velvety in texture, and a gentle light caresses the model's skin. The tender bond between the woman and her animal becomes a subtle metaphor for love — the dog, a traditional symbol of fidelity, is the silent confidant of an intimate scene.

In this painting realism meets the elegance of the gallant painting of earlier centuries.
