| In this canvas Childe Hassam opens up the wide breath of the Atlantic coast — a band of sand, dunes covered with grass, and a sky that stretches all the way to the horizon. The air seems saturated with salt and light, and the whole composition exudes the calm of a summer day by the ocean. It is a landscape in which nature is not a backdrop but a full protagonist. Hassam builds the picture with an energetic, shimmering patch of colour.
