| From a sea-washed rock gazes a figure woven from light and mist — the Lorelei, the siren-maiden of Rhine legend whose song lured sailors to their doom. Childe Hassam clothes this old myth in the language of American Impressionism: instead of dark menace we receive a shimmering fabric of colour, where water, flesh and air seem almost to melt into one another. The whole composition breathes with movement. Short, energetic strokes build the sense of humid air and waves breaking somewhere below, while cool blues and greens are interrupted by warm reflections on the skin. Hassam does not illustrate the legend literally — he suggests its mood, balancing sensuality and melancholy, beauty and the quiet unease that always shadows tales of the sea's seductive creatures. It is a painting that rewards a longer look. Up close it dissolves into an almost abstract play of pure colour; from a distance it gathers into a pensive vision of woman and element. Here the Lorelei tempts not with threat but with mystery — and it is this ambiguity that holds the eye and lingers in memory. Painted in 1904, the canvas won Hassam the prestigious Thomas B. Clarke Prize at the National Academy of Design the following year. It soon entered the collection of Henry Walters and today belongs to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. |
