Scheveningen beach here comes alive not in the rhythm of a bathing resort but in the slow pace of fishermen's everyday life. On the dunes a group gathers - women in heavy skirts and white caps, men in waistcoats, children stretched on the sand - as though waiting for the boats to come back from the catch. From the left, a huge dramatic storm cloud rises above them, occupying nearly half of the canvas and turning an ordinary genre scene into a quiet spectacle of nature. Achenbach conducts a dialogue of two kinds of light here: on one side the dark, navy mass of sky saturated with moisture and the energy of a downpour yet to come, on the other a delicate silvery opening where the sails of returning ships flicker. The asymmetry keeps the viewer's eye wandering across the canvas, searching for light and finding it in small accents - the red of a kerchief, the brightness of caps, the reflections on wet sand. In this painting Achenbach proves to be not only a marine painter but a subtle observer of coastal life. Instead of heroising his figures, he grants them a quiet dignity - he shows their waiting, the wind tugging at clothes, the raw beauty of the northern shore.
