| It is one of those paintings in which architecture, sea and atmosphere weave into a composition of almost operatic character. On the right, in full splendour, rises the wooden lighthouse on Ostend's pier - a sturdy, slightly baroque structure with warm reds of timber and a flag torn by the wind. On its platform stand figures, almost motionless, as if captivated by the sea which at that moment is expelling the dark silhouette of a towboat disappearing in clouds of smoke. Achenbach paints the texture of water with remarkable tenderness: the green of rolling waves, delicate traces of foam on the stone quays, the restless light reflected from the wet planks of the pier. The dark cloud of smoke from the tug's funnel becomes here the third protagonist of the painting - it mixes with storm clouds and clings to the sky like a mark of the era, in which the sea was ever more often conquered not by sail but by steam. Above everything a fragment of parting sky brightens, and - most poetically - a pale disc of the moon is still visible in daylight. It is a subtle sign: Achenbach does not simply paint a harbour, but the hour of transition, the moment when day wrestles with approaching night and man with his labour on the border of the elements. The painting holds a stillness within it despite all its movement - and it is precisely this paradoxical balance that makes it so memorable. |
