| The figure of a standing peasant in traditional Kraków dress fills almost the entire space of the painting, presented with a directness that makes us feel his calm gaze upon us. Aleksander Gierymski lights the man with a soft, frontal light, modelling the face and the folds of the costume with searching attention. This is no idealised folk type but a particular man – with his own story written into his features and bearing. Gierymski was a painter exceptionally demanding of himself, and his studies of peasant figures combine realistic observation with a luminous, almost impressionistic palette. The cool background brings out the silhouette and underlines the dignity of the model, far from any picturesque idyll. Within this restraint lies the artist's deep respect for his sitter. The painting belongs to the most valuable current of Polish realism of the late 19th century, in which the countryside and its people became a subject treated with seriousness and truth. Today the work captivates with its sincerity and painterly class, a testament to one of the most singular talents in Polish art. The study was painted around 1895, while Gierymski stayed for two years in Bronowice near Kraków with Włodzimierz Tetmajer – the same host immortalised by Wyspiański in 'The Wedding'. It is linked to his major canvas 'The Peasant Coffin'. The work entered the National Museum in Kraków as a gift from Tetmajer in 1902 and is displayed in the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art in the Sukiennice. |
