From the canvas a woman regards us who needs no one's permission to command the entire picture. Mary Edwards sits upright, wrapped in the deep, glowing red of a silk gown whose folds catch the light like molten metal. Hogarth paints no frail drawing-room lady here; he constructs a portrait of character, in which every detail, from the carefully arranged lace to the cool sparkle of diamonds, speaks of status, will and self-assurance. Around the figure the artist scatters signs that read like a personal manifesto. A globe and classical busts evoke knowledge and reason, while the unrolled scroll beside the sitter proclaims the virtues of liberty and property, values that a woman managing a vast fortune understood all too well. At her feet an alert dog gazes upward with devotion, a motif rarely paired with female portraits and here suggesting the sitter's independence and self-reliance. The whole composition is held in warm, dignified tones of red, gold and muted browns that lend the scene a monumental, almost commemorative character. Hogarth fuses the keen eye of the observer with the grandeur of the great state portrait, producing an image at once intimate and lofty. It is a work that arrests the gaze and compels us to ask who this remarkable woman, looking out at us across nearly three centuries, truly was.
