Sunflowers
Vincent Van Gogh

| On this canvas yellow is not a background colour – it is the subject itself. Sunflowers stand in a clay jug, some flung open to the light, others already bowing as if the weight of ripe seeds pulled them toward the earth. Van Gogh paints them with thick, almost sculptural paint, laying petals in spiralling, whirling strokes that lend monumental presence to a simple, everyday object. The ground is pale, almost white, so that the bouquet seems to radiate its own warmth. Shades of yellow, orange and gold interweave in an endless play of tones – a study of light and matter in which the artist proves that a single colour can have as many faces as there are brushstrokes on the canvas. Each sunflower is different: one full of life, another already fading, a third turned in profile like a face in a portrait. The painting belongs to the famous series Van Gogh created in Arles in 1888 to decorate the guest room for Paul Gauguin at the Yellow House. It was a gesture of friendship and ambition – the artist wanted to show that the southern sun and his own passion could transform even the humblest motif. Sunflowers became a symbol of his work: joyful, restless and strikingly modern. The series was painted in August 1888 in Arles, Provence. Van Gogh made several versions of the subject; today they are scattered in museums worldwide, each testifying to his fascination with yellow and with a flower that – as he wrote to his brother Theo – for him meant gratitude. |
