Vincent van Gogh turns to one of the most beautiful parables of the Gospel and translates it into the language of his own fervent palette. At the very centre of the composition we see the moment of lifting — the Samaritan struggling to raise the wounded traveller onto the back of a horse. It is a gesture full of effort and tenderness at once. The painting was created as a free interpretation of a work by Eugène Delacroix, yet Van Gogh infused it with his own temperament: undulating brushstrokes, intense blues and warm yellows give the scene dynamism and an almost palpable tension. The rocky landscape in the background heightens the sense of a lonely road and the weight of the act of helping. This is a work with a deeply human message — about compassion that crosses the boundaries of strangeness. Painted during his convalescence in Saint-Rémy, The Good Samaritan is also a personal confession by the artist, for whom empathy and solidarity with the suffering were the highest values.
