Here Van Gogh reaches for a bright, shimmering palette, laying down the paint in short, decisive touches that bring the whole surface of the canvas to life. River, grass and sky seem to breathe in the same luminous rhythm. It is a painting of transition — a bridge between the dark Dutch manner and the dazzling brightness the artist was discovering in the French capital. The influence of the Impressionists and Pointillists he met in Paris is clearly felt in the handling of light and colour. And yet the impetuous energy of the strokes remains entirely and unmistakably his own. Despite the apparent ordinariness of the motif, the scene pulses with the quiet joy of communing with nature on the threshold of a great artistic transformation. There is no drama or pathos here — instead, the freshness of a gaze belonging to someone learning anew how to look at the world. The riverbank becomes a pretext for a pure celebration of colour, light and movement. The painting was made in 1887, during the pivotal Paris period, when Van Gogh was living with his brother Theo in Montmartre and absorbing the novelties of the avant-garde. It was then that his palette brightened dramatically, paving the way for the masterpieces soon to be created in sunlit Arles.
