In this canvas Van Gogh captures himself in a straw hat against a radiant blue that spreads around the figure like energy. Short, decisive brushstrokes run in different directions, creating a dynamic, almost swirling fabric of paint. The yellow of the hat and the warm tones of the face collide with the coolness of the background, building a tension that animates the whole composition. The artist's face, marked by a russet beard and a piercing gaze, radiates focused intensity. Van Gogh does not idealise himself — he shows the rawness of his features, the fatigue, and at the same time the vitality of a man who gives himself entirely to painting. It is a portrait honest to the limit, in which every brushstroke seems to carry a fragment of emotion. The number 'F 526' comes from the catalogue raisonné of Jacob-Baart de la Faille, the fundamental inventory of Van Gogh's works. In the summer of 1887 the artist created a whole series of self-portraits in a straw hat, practising new colour and texture solutions on his own face that he could not test on paid models.
