Vincent van Gogh's face emerges from a dense, vibrating web of brushstrokes, as if the artist built his own likeness from hundreds of short, energetic dashes. Each carries a different hue — cool blue beside warm ochre, green threading through the russet beard — while the background dissolves into a shimmering mosaic of colour. This is a portrait painted not to smooth the features, but to capture the very tension of looking. The painter's gaze is intent, almost piercing — the eyes observe the viewer with the attention of someone who spent hours studying his own face in the mirror like a landscape. Within that concentration lies both the detachment of an investigator and the unease of a man trying to seize a fleeting truth about himself. The whole composition pulses with a rhythm that became the hallmark of Van Gogh's Paris period — the influence of Pointillism and Impressionism filtered through his own feverish temperament. Colour here does not describe reality but lights it from within, making the artist's face seem to vibrate with light. During barely two years in Paris (1886–1888) Van Gogh painted nearly thirty self-portraits — partly because he could not afford to pay models. The mirror became his cheapest and most patient sitter, and the series records the dramatic evolution of his style from dark Dutch tones toward an explosion of colour.
