The contrast between the deep, velvety gloom of the landscape and the radiant aura of the apparition gives the scene a deeply spiritual and moving dimension. The artist masters chiaroscuro: a vast, romantic landscape sinks into evening greys, while golden and silvery rays draw from the dark the silhouettes of the startled shepherds and their flocks.
