Rachel Ruysch was one of the most celebrated painters of her age and one of the few women to build an international career at the turn of the eighteenth century. As the daughter of the eminent anatomist Frederik Ruysch, she drew on her father's natural collections; her paintings fetched higher prices than works by Rembrandt, and she remained active almost until the age of eighty.
