A golden field of ripe wheat spills across the entire width of the painting like a sea of warm light, reaching all the way to a distant bay and hills hazing blue in the summer heat. Bruegel frames the landscape from an almost dizzying elevated perspective, so that the viewer seems to hover above the field, taking in the whole rhythm of labour and rest. It is one of the greatest landscapes in the history of European art — a picture in which you can feel the glow of an August afternoon and the scent of cut grain. At the centre of the composition, in the shade of a spreading pear tree, a group of harvesters break off work to eat and rest. One man sleeps with arms flung wide, wholly surrendered to the drowsy heaviness of the heat, while others cut bread and reach for a jug. All around, the rhythm of sickles and bound sheaves marks the timeless order of rural life. Bruegel renders the scene without idealisation, with tender attention to the weary human body and the simple pleasures of a short break. The painting belongs to the famous cycle 'The Seasons', in which the artist was among the first in history to make landscape and the cycle of nature an independent, fully fledged subject of painting. 'The Harvesters' is a hymn to the earth, to labour and to the abundance of summer — a work that, centuries on, loses none of its sensual, almost tangible power. Looking at it, we instinctively slow our breath, as if we too had sat for a moment in the shade of the tree amid the sun-baked field.
