Here is paradise in all its abundance — a lush garden where, among greenery, flowers and trees, animals from all over the world gather. Horses, lions, birds, monkeys and exotic creatures live side by side in perfect harmony, and in the distance, bathed in gentle light, stand Adam and Eve — at the very moment that will change the fate of all humankind. This is the work of two masters. Jan Brueghel the Elder painted the landscape, the plants and all this zoological wealth with meticulous precision, while Peter Paul Rubens brought to life the luminous, full-bodied figures of the first humans. The meeting of two temperaments — a miniaturist of nature and a master of the monumental nude — produced a picture that dazzles from up close and from afar alike. At the very heart of the composition unfolds the drama of the Fall: Eve reaches for the fruit of the tree of knowledge, tempted by the serpent, and the idyll of paradise is marked by a foreboding of loss. Rubens and Brueghel enclose the entire biblical story of innocence and sin within a single frame — the beauty of the world before the Fall collides with the inevitable end of paradise. The painting was born of the union of two outstanding talents, a frequent and prized practice in seventeenth-century Antwerp. The work today belongs to the Mauritshuis in The Hague and is regarded as one of the most beautiful testimonies to the artistic friendship between Brueghel and Rubens.
