View of Amsterdam with the Ship 'De Spiegel' and Other Vessels on the IJ (or View of Amsterdam with Ships on the IJ)
Ludolf Bakhuizen
28 Gru 1630 – 17 Lis 1708

The panoramic masterpiece “View of Amsterdam with the Ship ‘De Spiegel’” is one of the most spectacular and prestigious marine landscapes in Ludolf Bakhuizen’s oeuvre. With extraordinary sweep and reverence for detail, the painter captures the power of the Dutch fleet at the height of its glory, as it seems to challenge nature itself. The broad expanse of the River IJ teems with life beneath a sky filled with dynamic, monumental clouds, pierced by shafts of pure northern light.

The viewer’s gaze is drawn above all to the left side of the canvas, where the mighty three-masted warship “De Spiegel” proudly dominates the scene. Bakhuizen reproduced the vessel’s richly carved, gilded stern with almost jeweller-like precision, while the flag of Amsterdam flies proudly above it. This military colossus is set against smaller riverboats and merchant yachts, which deftly manoeuvre across the foaming surface of the water. The artist masterfully captures the play of light on the folds of wind-filled sails and on the crests of the waves, giving the entire scene remarkable depth and a vivid sense of constant motion.

In the background, where sky and water meet, the carefully drawn horizon of old Amsterdam unfolds — the city that was then a capital of global trade and finance, with church towers and a dense forest of masts visible in the harbour. This canvas is more than a portrait of a city and its fleet; it is an iconic manifesto of the Dutch Golden Age, a story of prosperity, maritime dominance and human enterprise.

The warship “De Spiegel” (“The Mirror”), immortalised in the foreground of this work, was one of the most legendary vessels in the history of the Dutch navy. It took part in the famous Four Days’ Battle of 1666 against the English fleet, during which it served as the flagship of the celebrated admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Interestingly, Ludolf Bakhuizen completed this monumental canvas as a special commission for the city authorities of Amsterdam, who wished to commemorate the pride of their fleet and the power of their port for purely representative and diplomatic purposes.
