| This canvas is almost a panoramic photograph of seventeenth-century Amsterdam harbour - yet painted with such emotional charge that the reproduction feels like a period document. At the centre, proud as a sculpture, a ship with a baroque stern and the Dutch flag pushes toward the viewer. All around, dense life unfolds: slender yachts, merchant sailing ships, cargo barges, a guard boat firing a puff of cannon salute. To the left, the city's contours - church and warehouse towers emerging from harbour haze. Bakhuizen immortalises the capital of the commercial world of his age. In a living room, study or - especially - a hotel or restaurant dining room, it becomes a conversation in itself. |
