| The air grows dense, and a heavy, leaden sky hangs over the vast plain, about to burst into a downpour. Chełmoński captures this taut second of stillness, when the world holds its breath before the rain arrives. The grasses bend under the first gust, and the whole space seems to tremble in anticipation of the storm that will soon roll over the countryside. The painter builds the picture on a great, dramatic contrast between the darkening sky and the last streaks of light still slipping across the ground. The palette descends into muted greys, greens and cool blues, while free, energetic brushstrokes render the movement of clouds and wind with almost physical force. This is painting in which one can feel the dampness and the scent of the approaching storm. The strength of this work lies in its mood - in the tension between calm and tempest, between silence and the oncoming roar. Chełmoński, the unrivalled poet of the Polish landscape, turns an ordinary change of weather into a spectacle full of emotion and the awe of nature.
