In the middle of a wide, sun-drenched meadow, an old peasant and a small boy gaze up at the sky, following the flight of storks gliding beneath the clouds. In this gesture - the raised head, the pointing hand - lies all the tenderness of a meeting of generations and humanity's age-old fascination with the returning birds. Chełmoński captures a moment that is simple and yet deeply moving. The painter spreads before us a vast expanse of sky that fills most of the canvas, giving the scene breath and lightness. The palette rests on cool blues, delicate greys and the warm green of the meadow, while free, airy brushstrokes convey the boundlessness of the rural landscape. The storks, barely sketched high in the sky, become a symbol of freedom, spring and return. This is a work about the bond between man, nature and his native land - about how the simple sight of birds in flight can stir the heart and unite grandfather and grandson in a single moment of wonder. In Polish tradition, the stork is a sign of home, happiness and a return to one's roots. Brought into an interior, the painting radiates calm, hope and a longing for a familiar, idyllic Poland. Storks was painted in 1900, when Chełmoński was already living at his manor in Kuklówka in Mazovia and observing the nature of the Polish countryside up close. The canvas is held in the National Museum in Warsaw and ranks among the artist's most lyrical works, in which a bird - a stork, partridge or crane - became a protagonist as important as a human figure.
