| A young soldier stands at full length, leaning on a cane before a partly overgrown rock. Gerard ter Borch renders Moses's features and uniform with cool precision, while his sister Gesina surrounded the figure with carefully chosen objects. Every detail — from the sheen of the armour to the folds of the fabric — is painted with the care characteristic of the Dutch masters. This is a portrait steeped in gravity and the silence of mourning. Around the young man are arranged symbols of transience and fidelity: a skull, a watch, ivy climbing the rock, watchful dogs. The mood of the work is elegiac — full of reflection on the fragility of life and the memory of those who departed too soon. The painting unites the art of portraiture with the vanitas allegory so typical of the Dutch Baroque.
