La Cervara, the Roman Campagna
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
16 Lip 1796 – 22 Lut 1875

La Cervara, the Roman Campagna is the luminous fruit of the young Corot's Italian journey — a landscape in which the sharp southern light seems almost to vibrate over the vast, undulating plain around Rome. Rocky slopes, scattered boulders and slender trees compose a scene at once full of calm and precisely built: every form carries its weight, every plane leads the eye into the depth of space toward the distant hills.

This is painting in which classical discipline meets the freshness of open-air observation. With almost architectural clarity Corot orders the masses of rock and clumps of greenery, yet enlivens them with shimmering light and the clear blue sky of an Italian morning. Muted greens, warm ochres and stony greys form a restrained palette that is nonetheless saturated — the colours of the sun captured with the tenderness of someone seeing this landscape for the first time.

Within this seemingly tranquil view lies something groundbreaking: here Corot proves that a landscape can be both faithful to nature and deeply considered, realistic and poetic at once. The Roman Campagna becomes less a specific place than an image of a certain harmony — of light, form and silence. It is a work that still dazzles with its freshness and explains why Corot is regarded as one of the fathers of modern landscape.

The picture arose during Corot's first, formative stay in Italy (1825-1828), when day after day he studied the light of the Roman Campagna in the open air. He worked the La Cervara motif — an area on the outskirts of Rome — in several versions; one of them he showed at the Paris Salon of 1827 alongside the famous Bridge at Narni. The present canvas is today in the Cleveland Museum of Art, while related versions are kept by the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Louvre.
