Lady in Blue
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
16 Lip 1796 – 22 Lut 1875

A woman turned almost away from us, dressed in a gown of deep, satin blue, leans against a table with a lightness that seems to hover outside of time. Corot builds the entire composition on a single, seemingly modest gesture — a hand at the hip, the soft twist of the waist, a glance cast over the shoulder. The painting is sparing in means yet full of inner life, where every fold of fabric appears to breathe.

The blue of the dress is no ordinary colour here — it becomes the mood of the whole canvas. Around it the artist keeps a muted, smoky background, from which only the outlines of the studio and a bright patch of flowers emerge. This restrained palette makes the figure glow gently from within, as if light were born not from outside but from the cloth itself. Corot, the master of landscape, proves he can paint a human being with the same tenderness he gave to morning mists over a pond.

Within this quiet scene lie melancholy and reverie — the lady seems absorbed in her own thoughts, unreachable and all the more intriguing for it. The canvas tells no anecdote but a state of mind: a suspended moment in which beauty does not pose, it simply exists. On the wall of any interior the work brings an atmosphere of refined calm and classical elegance.

Painted in 1874, just a year before the artist's death, it is among his most celebrated figure studies. The sitter was Emma Dobigny, Corot's favourite model, who also lent her features to other late works. Today "La Dame en bleu" belongs to the Louvre in Paris (inv. RF 2056) and is often compared with "Woman with a Pearl" as proof that the old master of landscape remained, to the very end, a perceptive portraitist.
