Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
16 Lip 1796 – 22 Lut 1875

Agostina is one of the most imposing figure portraits in Corot's entire output — a work in which the landscapist from Barbizon reveals himself as a painter of a monumental, dignified female presence. The Italian model, dressed in the folk costume of the Ciociaria region, stands confidently before the viewer, and her gaze — direct, calm, faintly defiant — instantly commands attention. This is no anonymous figurant, but a concrete, living presence.

Corot clearly delights in building a contrast of white shirt, warm red and deep browns, enlivened by small accents of jewellery and coloured fabrics. The figure is treated with sculptural solidity yet with the master's characteristic softness of modelling — the face emerges from subtle transitions of light, the back set against an indefinite, faintly hazy landscape. This blend of realistic presence and poetic background lends the portrait a noble, timeless aura.

In Agostina echoes the great traditions of portraiture — from the Venetian Renaissance to Spanish court painting — yet filtered through Corot's tender, intimate sensibility. The woman seems to hover halfway between model and allegory: real, and at the same time elevated into a symbol of calm, proud womanhood. The painting captivates through a simplicity that conceals true grandeur — which is precisely why it is still counted among the master's figural masterpieces.

The model, Agostina Segatori, was a professional Italian model working in Paris who posed for many artists of the age. Remarkably, a decade or so later she ran the café Le Tambourin in Montmartre and befriended Vincent van Gogh, who also portrayed her — so her face recurs across several chapters in the history of painting. Corot's work is today held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
