Cupid slips from the bed at dawn, casting the viewer a triumphant, almost mischievous glance, while Psyche still sleeps, unaware. This is no sweet image of romance but a sharp observation of the interplay of desire, naivety and power. The mastery of neoclassical drawing reveals itself in every inch: bodies sculpted by light, meticulously rendered fabrics, a cool, almost marble flesh. David forgoes idealisation for a surprising realism – Cupid is an adolescent with earthy, sun-tanned skin, lending the scene a piquant, almost everyday truthfulness. The tension between classical form and psychological candour makes this a singular work. Beneath the smooth surface of the myth lies a reflection on the fleeting nature of passion and on how easily love can be a game played by one side.
