Modest half-timbered farmhouses nestle along a rutted road beneath a restless, billowing sky. A large puddle reflects the houses and the silhouettes of travellers, while the whole is held together by that balance, so characteristic of Ruisdael, between the solidity of the earth and the movement of the clouds. The scene hums with the quiet life of the province: a woman and child walking the muddy road, a man looking out from a doorway, logs and stone blocks stacked by the steps — small traces of everyday labour. Ruisdael does not idealise the countryside but grants it a dignity usually reserved for grander subjects. The drama of the picture is built above all by the sky — changeable, saturated with moisture, casting shifting patches of light and shadow over the land. This is painting in which the weather becomes the protagonist, and an ordinary view of roadside cottages rises to a meditation on transience and endurance.
