From a high vantage point a vast panorama of Haarlem spreads out, dominated by the monumental mass of St. Bavo's church. In the foreground, on bright green meadows, long strips of linen lie spread out in the sun — the famous bleaching fields for which the city was renowned. Jacob van Ruisdael composes the picture so that nearly two thirds of the canvas is taken up by the immense sky, making it the true protagonist of the scene. Mighty billowing clouds drift across the sky, casting shifting patches of light and shadow over the land. This play of brightness makes the landscape pulse with life: now the white of the linen and the house walls flares up, now it sinks into gentle half-shadow. Ruisdael renders the moist, changeable atmosphere of the Dutch lowlands with extraordinary sensitivity. The painting belongs to the famous series of 'Haarlempjes' — small panoramas of the artist's home town, regarded as a pinnacle of Dutch landscape painting. It is not merely a faithful record of a particular place but a tribute to landscape, light and space.
