| A mountain stream crashes down over moss-covered boulders, and its foaming white becomes the bright heart of the whole composition. Jacob van Ruisdael builds the picture on the tension between the rushing water and the weight of rock and dark forest surrounding it. The viewer's eye is swept along by the current and led deep toward dim, moist distances where the earth meets a restless sky. The canvas radiates a raw, northern melancholy. Ruisdael paints nature not as idyll but as a force indifferent to humankind — leaning, half-dead trees and ragged clouds give the scene a tone of dramatic reflection. Light breaks through sparingly, drawing the waterfall's foam and the wet sheen of the stones out of the gloom, so that the whole composition seems to breathe cool, fresh air. This is a landscape about transience and about a power greater than human affairs. In the ceaseless fall of the water hides Ruisdael's favourite motif of endless motion and impermanence. The work enchants today as it did centuries ago, uniting realistic observation with a deeply felt, almost Romantic mood. |
