In this painting, Aivazovsky shows that the sea can speak in whispers. A light, translucent surf rolls toward the viewer as a green-turquoise crest, while in the distance a steamer trails a plume of smoke - the only truly dark line in all this light. The sky, without a single sharp edge, shifts in soft tones from silvery blue to the steely grey of the approaching evening. Two seagulls hung in the air are like silent metronomes measuring the rhythm in which the waves rise and fall. The whole scene has the meditative lightness of watercolour, though it is oil. This is Aivazovsky's sea at its most subtle - no storm, no pathos, only that unmistakable light one can almost touch.
