A great sailing ship, tangled with ropes and crew, sinks into foaming chaos, while a single skiff drifts away with a handful of survivors, barely visible in the golden-pink light of a stormy dawn. The painter divides the canvas into two energies - the dark, torn mass of the ship and the soft, almost pastel atmosphere of the sky. This contrast turns the drama into a sigh rather than a cry: we see the vastness of the elements and the fragile instant on which rescue depends. Despite its theme of disaster, the picture carries a deep poetry.
